Gauff is a grumpy elderly horsetrainer who has a history of disfunctional relationships. This includes the relationship with his adult daughter, Brandy, who he hasn't been in contact with for multiple years. But all that is about to change when Brandy is diagnosed with cancer. Her husband, John, despite his estranged relationship with Brandy, asks Gauff if he will take care of his teenage granddaughter Jesse, while Brandy is receiving treatment.
