The story begins in Foundling Hospital, where the main character, Hetty Feather, is abandoned as a baby. Soon, she is taken by a kind-hearted foster family and stays with them for 5 years. But, Hetty needs to go back to Foundling Hospital, as she misses her friends, especially Jem, who has promised to marry her when they both grow up.
