Finch is a 16-year-old teenage boy who grew up in a house in the Appalachian Mountains with his 'grandma' and 'grandpa'. When they come to die, he needs to survive on his own. Far away from the modern world, his live mainly consists of fishing and reading. When sherrif Janelle Brennan finds hem there alone, she is forced to take him with her to the modern world he's never seen before. When she finds out the boy has to sleep in a cell overnight due to lack of space, and then will be placed in a foster home of which she knows the father is doing drugs, she sees no other way then to (temporarily) take him home to her own house with her husband and three children. At first, they're not happy with Finch, but he's slowly starting to grow on them as he experiences his first car ride, eats his first spaghetti, and gets his first picture taken. When it turns out Finch' real mother is still alive, and he's the only heir to the house in the mountains, which also turns out to be worth a lot of money and which his real mother is after now, a custody battle begins.
