Ten-year-old Sara Stanley, the privileged daughter of a wealthy merchant in Montreal, is sent away to live with her deceased mother's sisters, in the small town of Avonlea, on Prince Edward Island.

Sara and the children from the Avonlea public school are trying to raise money for new books for the school library. After a travelling scammer runs away with everything they had collected thus far, it is up to the children to collect the money again. Jasper Dale, the hermit of the city who is very shy, comes to the rescue and Sara receives a donation beyond her wildest dreams.

Circumstances throw Rachel Lynde, the most disagreeable woman in Avonlea, and Alexander Abraham, the most disagreeable man in Avonlea, in close quarters while waiting out a smallpox outbreak. Sara and Felix are added by accident. The foursome must try to live together, and as time goes on, they come closer together. Everyone learns not to take things on face value, and Sara shows everyone about making friends.

While Sara tries to master simple stitches, she hears the wildest stories about Rachel Lynde and Alexander Abraham and about Marilla and a mysterious man. Marilla decides to silence the gossip about her years of spinsterhood and invents her suitor named Duncan McTavish. But when a man with the same name ends up in town, Marilla has to deal with a whole lot more gossip.

When Felix throws a rock through the window of the Old Lloyd house, Sara soon discovers that the reclusive old woman is not as rich as she seems. When Olivia's good friend, aspiring concert singer Sylvia Gray, comes to Avonlea for a visit, she might have a startling connection to Mrs. Lloyd.

Alec and Janet go away to celebrate their wedding anniversary, leaving Felicity in charge. Her know-it-all attitude quickly leads to mayhem. Hetty settles a water rights dispute with the owner of a neighbouring farm.

Sara convinces Peter Craig to attend church with the family. The other children bully him about his father who's in prison and Sara believes this might make a change. Meanwhile Peg Bowan is also convinced to go to church. She's described as the "Witch of Avonlea", but doesn't stay for long when the townspeople show their chagrin about the situation. But when influenza takes a hold on two children, it's Peg who comes to the rescue.
